Merrill Reese's Analysis Of The Middle Linebacker Nominees
By Merrill Reese

"The three linebackers in this group that I've had the pleasure of watching in person during our radio broadcasts are Bill Bergey, Byron Evans and Jeremiah Trotter and all three of them are outstanding examples of how to play the position in different ways.

"I think Bergey was an amazingly instinctive middle linebacker and they don't give him enough credit for that. People too often think of Bergey as this raging, tough, hard-hitting middle linebacker. What they don't realize is that Bergey could go sideline to sideline as quickly as any middle linebacker in the league. He could also teach players where to be and how to react because he had tremendous football instincts. Now, Bill was ferocious and he was intimidating, but he was more than that.

"I think the word 'intimidator' fits Jeremiah Trotter. He can bring people to their feet when he makes these great tackles and when they see his power. Today, even, Trotter is a dominating player when he is healthy and I expect that this season.

"Byron never had a chance to reach his peak with the Eagles because of that knee injury. It took him a while to learn the complicated 46 defense. Buddy Ryan would play Byron and then pull him in favor of Mike Reichenbach because it was such a complicated system. By the time Byron really felt comfortable with that, he was gone. That was such a shame, because Byron had a lot of great football in front of him."
