I went to my first Eagles game, actually my first professional football game, in November 1949. The Eagles were playing at Shibe Park. The Eagles were the defending NFL champions and their opponent that day was the Los Angeles Rams, with their all-star cast of QB Bob Waterfield, WR Elroy Hirsch, E. Tom Fears, et al. The game was billed as the "Battle of the Year." I had my greatest Eagles fan moment that game, when Hall of Famer Elroy “Crazy Legs” Hirsch caught a Waterfield pass right in front of us, only to have Eagle DB Russ Craft strip him clean and go all the way to the end zone untouched for six points! The Eagles went on to a 38-14 victory!
